Computers at the Burrell Schmidt

There are two Linux workstations (emu and koala), a Linux disk server (kookaburra) and a Windows PC (galah; an Australian bird which is also slang for a real idiot). The standard mode is to use emu for observing and koala for data reduction. Koala lives in the living room; all the other computers live in the computer room.

emu and galah are connected via a KVM switch which allows either of them to be viewed from the monitor in the dome or the observing monitor downstairs (the monitor nearest the kitchen). To switch screens, type serially Cntl, Esc, and then select the computer you want with the arrow keys and return. Koala's terminal is on the desk looking onto the driveway.

The Linux disks are all cross-mounted using nfs. The main data disk is now kookaburra, and can be seen by the Linux machines as /kookaburra_home and by galah as Z:/

Laptops can now connect automatically to the network using the CAT5 cables in the living room.

When you leave the Schmidt, please take a few minutes to clean up your disk usage, delete files you won't be needing again, etc. Messy disks can be confusing, and disk space is not infinite!
