Group Project #1
The Relative Distances to the Virgo and Coma Cluster, and the value
of the Hubble Constant
Use the Tully-Fisher relationship to get
- the relative distance between Coma and Virgo, i.e,
d(Coma)/d(Virgo)
- the absolute distance to Coma
- the value of the Hubble constant
All of your quantities should have errorbars, of course!
You must start with observed data (ie velocity widths and apparent
magnitudes), but you can adopt a value for the distance to Virgo (you
must cite your source, of course, and it must come with an errorbar).
You must also compare your results with others published in the
literature.
Your write up must be written up ApJ-style and consist of the following
sections
- Title/Abstract
- Introduction
- Methods
- Results
- Discussion
- Summary
- References (in proper ApJ citation style)
In addition, each group must write also include
- an Appendix including any computer analysis code, and
- a description of how the work was divided up (ie who did what).
This description must be
signed by all members of the group.
